Due to the constant distraction of gardening, cooking, and all other fun “domestic” type activities, I decided to start an additional blog solely for those pursuits. While I don’t wish that blog to be as serious as this (design-related) blog, hopefully I will become a better writer with more practice.

Veggieblog (?)

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Due to the constant distraction of gardening, cooking, and all other fun “domestic” type activities, I decided to start an additional blog solely for those pursuits. While I don’t wish that blog to be as serious as this (design-related) blog, hopefully I will become a better writer with more practice.

Without further ado… What I’d Rather Be Doing.

Yes, the design is already further along than the design for this site. And the title is still in contention… I want something snarky as well as SEO-friendly and have failed at both.

Birthday!

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Today, I am 24.

Birfday! on 12seconds.tv

It pains me to think that in this last year, I didn’t accomplish everything I set out to do. Admittedly, there were some rough patches but I feel like I’ve continued to spin my wheels since SXSW. This in mind, here are some goals for next year:

  1. Write regularly here.
A part of the problem is that, while I am passionate about design and web design, I feel like I am still too much of a beginner to actually write about things that people would be interested in. But I should get over the fear of being boring and write for the sake of writing, since it isn’t like I have a lot of readers anyways.
  2. Finish PokerSoup.
Honestly, this has such great potential but my time hasn’t been efficiently spent while designing for it.
  3. Build and write at gardening/cooking blog.
I hate to be “yet-another-gardening-blog” but I adore blogs like My Tiny Plot, Calendula & Concrete, and One Block Diet that I can’t help but add my own voice.
  4. Speak somewhere, anywhere.
Like writing, I need a lot of help on my speaking abilities.

So, hopefully, this time next year I should be a lot farther along in my professional pursuits than I am currently. In the meanwhile, off I go for margaritas, peeps.

Life, slowly

Monday, September 1st, 2008

I just spent the weekend wrapping myself in indulgence and relaxation; wandering the streets of San Francisco and savoring the hours rather than spending my time on a computer. It was amazing, to say the least.

The highlight of the weekend concerned Slow Food Nation, a “broad and inclusive food movement to build an American food system that is sustainable, just, and delicious.” And really, this consisted of eating… and eating… and eating. The point was to enjoy food from sustainable and organic farms while meeting the farmers themselves; learning how the food was grown and how it came to your table. Essentially, slowing down the process of eating, and respecting this process rather than seeing it as a means to an end.

I further highlighted this fact for myself by reading Omnivore’s Dilemma, a book that explores, quite thoroughly and sometimes disturbingly, the process of most American meals to our table. This focuses primarily on corn, and it’s frankly disturbing to see how pervasive this ingredient has wormed it’s way into all of our food products, and what it does to our environment in the process.

It is with both Slow Food and Omnivore’s Dilemma in mind that I am resolving to change myself in small, but significant ways. I’ve already been headed towards the mentality of “organic good, cheap Safeway bad” but now it’s evolved more intelligently into both supporting local agriculture and farmers as well as making sure what goes into my mouth and body is healthful and supportive. More than anything does the food I eat have to be delicious; I don’t believe my love for cookies and sweets will ever be tempered. But now my cookie will be homemade (begone, HFCS), and using better ingredients.

The only problem with this proposition is cost; regardless, it should be easier to cut out the TV budget from my life than decrease the budget that directly impacts my self in a positive way. Cost be’damned!
