Multivariate Testing: Know what works

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The day after my presentation on multivariate testing at the Geek Dinner, I kept thinking about how I was so astonished that almost no one there knew about or worked with multivariate testing. Perhaps I am being a bit self-deprecating, but I keep thinking that everyone else knows more than I do; so it’s strange (and enlightening) that there is a field where I can educate. I wanted to give a quick down down of what I talked about, and hopefully get a bit more information out there.

A/B Testing; smaller and easier

A/B Testing (or Split Tests) is the more well-known, easier to understand cousin of MVT. Basically, take your website, and create an alternate version — different design, different copy, anything you like — and set up your server to send 50% of your visitors to one version and 50% of your visitors to another. Then, you use your basic analytics package (like Google Analytics) or a click-tracking software (like Clicktracks), and determine which version of your website performs better depending on a certain metric (like how many visitors on each filled out a “Request Info” form).

Enter Multivariate Testing, A/B’s intimidating but really awesome cousin

The simplest difference between A/B and MVT is the number of “versions” you have on your website. In MVT, generally you set up a number of “factors” of things you will change. These factors could be:

  • Link Color
  • Header Image
  • Introductory Text
  • Background color/pattern
  • Button color
  • Button Text
  • Logo Location
  • Form Location
  • Number of Form Fields
  • So on and so forth…

Variations of these above factors, for something like “Link Color”, would be “Blue Link Color” and “Green Link Color”. A MVT is simply taking of all these factors and variations to create every single combination and finding out which combination of everything would create the best possible version of your website.

Full Factorial vs. Fractional Factorial

Obviously, the more factors and variations you combine, the larger exponentially the number of versions to test would become. A full factorial is simply every single version is tested, and a fractional factorial is only a subset of the number of variations — testing a random fourth of the entire number or so. This isn’t going to give perfect results, but my particular package will analyze how each of the groups perform, and determines which factors give the most positive impact and which give the most negative impact. So if you have a ton of ideas and things to test, you can use a fractional factorial to weed out the bad and negative ideas, then run a full factorial to find the best combination of the winning variations.

More information to come…

Hopefully the above makes sense; I’m going to write more about MVT testing soon but this post should give a good, quick overview of what A/B and Multivariate testing are and what they can do. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments!

Speaking at Silicon Valley Geek Dinner

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Hey, it’s my very first speaking engagement! Sadly, I’m not talking about anything REALLY awesome; I’ll be expanding a bit on multivariate testing, the stuff I do at work and how it has worked for the sites I manage. I promise to make it more interesting than it sounds.

This dinner is being held at Amarin Thai in Mountain View, on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 7:00pm.

Holy moly Happy Cog. Can I ever be granted the amazing web design skills of your entire team? Wibble wibble wibble.

Housing Works.

How do you do it?

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

How do people manage to do everything they want to do? I suspect the answer is, “Well, they don’t,” but I still feel like I’m way behind the curve.

My activities

  • Limedaring (writing): Yes, here. I need to write more, yes? And I actually need to write about design? I have lots of ideas for posts (CSS formatting! I’m particular about my formatting and no one else does it like me) but… they just don’t get written.
  • Limedaring (design): Haaa… yea, this place is still broken. I’ll get excited about fixing something (just got analytics working last week, thanks Mint!) — I’ll work on it for a few hours and then forget about doing everything else. Bah!
  • Veggieblog: Should I just start calling it that? I still don’t have a name, I still don’t have a design finished, and I have three posts in waiting.
  • Listonomics: I have several drafts but none are completed. Grump.
  • Giving 2.0: I have a post about my experiences with Team in Training here, but it’s still in draft form. Grump x2.
  • Yelp: I made Yelp elite… and then the excitement was over. It doesn’t help that I’m low on money so I’m visiting new places less often, but even when I do check out a new coffee shop or deli, I don’t feel as enthused to write a review.
  • Poker Soup The design draft is finished but I haven’t quite started coding. The coding should be the easy part, too.
  • Team In Training: Hey, charity! I managed to raise $2,500 and I’m running a half-marathon (!!!) in a week. This has killed a lot of my time over the last three weeks - running 3-5 miles every other day, long runs every weekend. It’ll all be over on Sunday.
  • Warhammer Online: Erm… look away, nothing to see here. I’m not playing an endless MMORPG really. >_<

Yea, the video-gaming should go first but it’s been great stress relief (except when my laptop kernel-panicks, but that’s another issues). And there are the misc. activities that I like to do that aren’t listed, like cooking, gardening, hiking, etc.

Waaagh, when will I be free? I guess until I don’t have a day job (Ha!) I’ll have to keep trucking along.

crowdSPRING

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Awhile back I posted on twitter a rather enigmatic message. Well, it didn’t take me too long to see the light and jump back into the arms and the opinions of the design community.

crowdSPRING, the spec-work community

I heard about crowdSPRING through a post on 37signals’ Signal vs. Noise blog. And while I have been aware of the NO!SPEC campaign for awhile, I was intrigued by what crowdSPRING offered. Basically, I was weak: I’m kind of poor right now, aching for fulfilling (and paying) projects, and the prospect of creating just a .psd of a website in exchange for $600-$1400 was very intriguing.

I told myself that I was to spend no more than an hour on a comp, submit it, and let it go if it didn’t do well. I knew I would be wasting my time if I devoted any time to winning these contests but figured if $700 was on the line, I could spare an hour in the evening. I would also get more experience at creating comps-on-the-fly; a dangerous problem I have is being way-too-picky and taking way-too-long on a project just to get a comp up.

Clients as Art Directors

Well… I didn’t take into account that if my initial comp went well (usually, since my design skillz are at or above the average crowdSPRING designer), I would then spend time creating additional and additional comp for every whim of the client. Never mind that some of their suggestions would harm the flow of the website or made no sense regarding their users — it was what THEY wanted WHEN they wanted and if you don’t do it, someone else will and you’d lose the “contest”.

Screw. That.

Seriously. I did not spend time learning about information architecture and user behavior patterns and general good design to give up my right to say, “No, that isn’t right, and here’s why.” I would attempt to explain on the comments why I did not do exactly what they wanted me to do and why, but I would get steamrolled by the next designer putting a skin on their ideas.

I consider it lesson learned; fast money will never be easy money. I could “bend over” and do what these clients wanted and hope that maybe they’ll pick my design, but now it seems like a really bad gamble on my time. Design community: you were right, and I’ll not touch spec-work again!
